Centerless Grinding

What is Centerless Grinding?

Machines for centerless grinding are precision machine tools especially adaptable for producing parts to precise limits of size, shape and surface finish. The Centerless grinding method, developed over a half century ago, eliminates the need for a centerheld work but takes full advantage of a three point support for the work. The development of centerless grinding machines has made it possible to efficiently and economically grind all types of workpieces to a high degree of accuracy, at high volume production rates.

Some major advantages of centerless grinding are:

  • It is an almost continues process
  • Workpieces are rigidly supported under the entire length of grinding cut. There is no end pressure from centers created on the workpiece during grinding.
  • Because the workpiece floats through the grinding operation and is self centered less stock is usually removed to achieve the finished diameter
  • Material Removal takes place on the diameter of the workpiece instead of the radius.
